Bread for the Journey

Courses for Forming Christian Disciples

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is not something that happens in just one moment when we come to realize that he is Lord. Being Jesus’ disciple is a lifelong journey of transformation. The journey of a Christian disciple certainly includes learning about Jesus, but moreover, it is a process of seeking to know Jesus and, by the grace of God, being transformed into his likeness.

A Christian disciple actively follows in the footsteps of Jesus. Jesus’ disciples do not sit along the roadside watching to see what God will do. We are participants in God’s activity in the world. But how do we know what God is calling us to do? How can we learn what it means to be a follower of Christ in today’s world?

As with any long journey, this one requires that we find nourishment along the way. Specifically, we need spiritual nourishment, “bread for the journey”, in order to continue moving toward God and growing in Christ. It is by feeding on this spiritual bread that we may hear God’s call and learn what being a follower of Christ means in today’s world.

As United Methodist Christians, at Woodway First UMC, we believe that there are a number of means by which we are formed into the likeness of God’s Son. Those means of receiving God’s grace, growing in Christ, and hearing God’s call include prayer, worship, serving others, conversation and fellowship with other Christians, and study. At WFUMC we offer a variety of ways to participate in all those means of receiving God’s grace and growing in Christ.
